Annual Shutdowns

Campus wide steam and electrical distribution systems outages take place annually during the July 4th holiday week.

This work is done on the main Rensselaer campus annually in order to perform critical infrastructure preventative maintenance.   The Physical Plant works closely with the Registrar’s Office, Summer Arch, Summer at Rensselaer and Rensselaer’s Conference Services to minimize the impact to our students.  By communicating the outage schedule well in advance with our clients we strive to minimize the impact to our researchers, faculty, staff and visitors.

The shutdown of the steam system will take begin on the Saturday before July 4th and end on the Sunday after July 4th.

There are electrical outages necessary to exercise electrical systems distribution feeders.  They are “short term outages” lasting between 5 and 120 minutes.  Additional electrical systems preventative maintenance may be done subject to funding availability.  If approved this work will cause outages in addition to the distribution feeder switching.

All steam and electrical outages will be posted to the Plog at as they become finalized.

Please whenever possible plan your scheduled activities around the July 4th holiday week to avoid any service interruptions.
